The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, has become a landmark event not just for its religious significance but for its groundbreaking use of AI and data analytics to ensure the safety of over 400 million pilgrims.
To handle the massive crowds, the Prayagraj Mela Police introduced an AI-based Integrated Command and Control Center (ICCC). The system uses real-time video feeds from more than 1,700 CCTV cameras to analyze crowd density, movement, and potential bottlenecks. It allows authorities to respond proactively to emergencies and ensure smooth traffic flow across the mela grounds.
The police have also established a dedicated data analytics team that receives specialized training in using AI for public safety. The system generates automatic alerts when unusual movement patterns are detected—whether a sudden gathering of people or restricted area breaches.
In addition to surveillance, predictive analytics are used to manage logistics, including food distribution, sanitation, and transportation. The AI platform also helps in coordinating efforts between different departments, from health services to disaster management.
This innovation marks a significant evolution in how large-scale events are managed in India and sets a global benchmark for merging spirituality and smart technology.
